The United Kingdom is a popular destination for those traveling abroad for the first time. The country is a familiar one, where people speak the same language, dress in much the same way and have many similar customs and traditions as those in America. For all of similarities, there are still things that you need to be aware of before you travel to the UK. Here are some things that you should know as you are planning your trip:

1.Passport

The only special item that you’ll need for entry into the United Kingdom is a passport. Many people wonder if they need a travel visa before heading overseas. Unless you are planning on spending months in the country for work or school, a passport is sufficient. As with any other time that you have traveled, make sure that you also carry your identification and that you keep your passport card separate from your actual passport. This will help you if you should misplace your passport while traveling.

2.Currency

The United Kingdom still uses the pound as its form of currency. You should know that if you plan to travel to another country in Europe from the UK, you’ll need to convert your cash into Euros. Make sure that you keep an eye on exchange rates for several months before you travel. You don’t have to wait until you reach the UK to convert your dollars into pounds. If the exchange rate is particularly good weeks before your trip, find somewhere local that will exchange your currency for you.

3.Driving

People in the United Kingdom not only drive on the other side of the road, they use road signs that are often times unfamiliar on first glance. If you plan on driving while on your trip to the UK, make sure that you research the rules of the road before you leave. If driving in the country makes you nervous, you’ll have plenty of transportation choices. The UK has a fantastic public transportation system that is incredibly easy to use.

4.Where to Go

Try to remember that the United Kingdom is more than London. While the city is a definite must-see, there are many others places in the country that are absolutely lovely to visit. You can head south to Land’s End or north to Stonehenge; there are literally hundreds of places to visit in the country. “Great Britain for Dummies” is an easy read that will tell you some of the best places to visit in the country.

5.Crime

Many people tend to think that the United Kingdom is free of crime simply because most of their police don’t carry guns. The United Kingdom has comparable crime statistics with the United States, so you must keep your wits about you while you’re touring the country. Use the same common-sense safety practices that you would use at home and you’ll be fine. Don’t flash your cash, keep your mobile device in your pocket when you aren’t using it and wear your purse across your body.

The UK is a lovely country to visit. Even though the people you’ll meet and the language that is spoken will remind you of home, you need to remember that you are in a different country. Keep the information above in mind and you’ll be sure to have one of the best vacations of your life.
